Do you remember when you first learned to drive?

Afraid. Anxious. Unsure. That’s what I remember feeling every time I’d get into the driver’s seat of my instructor’s Honda Civic. For me, making a clean right-hand turn seemed impossible. I simply could not clear the curb. As I went over the curb for the umpteenth time, my instructor kept reminding me patiently:

“Look where you are going because you will go where you look”.

This mantra became a guiding principle for me well after I got my driver’s license. Whenever I venture into anything that takes me outside of my comfort zone, I feel like I’m learning to drive all over again. The archived self-talk kicks in: “I have no idea what I’m doing. I don’t have the knowledge. I don’t have the money, and so on.”

Then I remember what helped me pass the driver’s test on the first try: Look where I want to go! In other words, when I look up and ahead, instead of looking down, I feel MORE confident to take the next baby step.

The same can be true for your journey as a real estate investor. If you don’t begin to look where you want to go, you’re probably setting yourself up to fail. Even my kids are starting to get it. Watch this video.
